Questions people ask
With a run, a 8x8 coop holds 13 standard hens, 27 bantams or 11 large-breed hens at our defaults (4 sq ft per standard hen inside, after Virginia Tech and Cooperative Extension). Kept shut in all day, the same floor holds only 5 standard hens, because confined birds need about 10 sq ft each.
For 13 standard hens the run needs 130 sq ft at 10 sq ft per hen, and the plan draws it 8' x 17' (136 sq ft), 72" at the low end and 97-1/2" at the coop. Its walls are hardware cloth the full height, with a 24 in apron against digging and a covered roof against hawks.
It is a walk-in coop: 6' walls, a 30 in person door and the floor 24" off the ground on 4x4 legs. You stand inside to clean, collect eggs and fill the feeder, and the run sits along the pop door side.
